Six months into 2023, and WE haven’t shown any signs of slowing down or stopping yet! Following our milestone 50th anniversary celebration at The Working Lunch last month, we have maintained that same energy everywhere we’ve gone, including our Nation’s Capital. We started the month off with West Side United’s Annual Meeting and Chicago Health Equity Summit on June 6th and ended with our monthly Advocacy Meeting on the 29th.

For those of you who haven’t been following Women Employed’s latest travels, here’s what you missed in this month’s edition of “Where in the World is Women Employed.”

West Side United’s Annual Meeting and Chicago Health Equity Summit

West Side United held its Annual Meeting and Chicago Health Equity Summit on June 6th. With WE’s Senior Career Pathways Manager, Tara Driver, and Programs and Research Coordinator, Efrata Sasahulih in attendance, the event celebrated and reflected on their past work to make West Side communities stronger, healthier, and more vibrant places to live. The invite-only Equity Summit also included several focused breakout discussion groups of community organizations and researchers to explore the landscape of services, programs, and interventions serving West Side communities. Through these discussions, West Side United developed a map of community organizations and programs that serve the West Side and identified gaps in key areas that link to life expectancy.

Chicago Jobs Council’s 42nd Annual Meeting Celebration

On Friday, June 15th, Women Employed’s Starr De Los Santos, Senior Coalition Manager, Tara Driver, Sharmili Majmudar, Executive Vice President of Policy, Programs, and Research, Efrata Sasahulih, and Michelle Schwartz, Senior Events and Volunteer Manager attended the Chicago Jobs Council’s 42nd Annual Meeting Celebration! We want to thank the meeting moderator, State Senator Celina Villanueva, 11th District, and panelists Carrie Felton of the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, Daniel Serota from Aon, and Richard Felton of Equity And Transformation for the rich discussion about what is the new and normal standard for the field of workforce development. Congratulations on a successful event Chicago Jobs Council and thank you for having us!

Malcolm X College Tour

Efrata Sasahulih, Programs and Research Coordinator attended a tour at Malcolm X College along with a group of participants from two of our Career Foundations consortium organizations on Wednesday, June 21st. During the tour, they saw state-of-the-art, life-like mannequins which students practiced with as part of a range of healthcare programs available at Malcolm X.

National Partnership for Women & Families’ “2023 Equity in Action: Powering Change Through Partnership”

WE President and CEO, Cherita Ellens and Sharmili Majmudar, EVP of Policy, Programs, and Research, represented Women Employed on June 22nd at La Vie in Washington, DC at the National Partnership for Women & Families’ “2023 Equity in Action: Powering Change Through Partnership” celebration. The event recognized trailblazers who are using the power of their individual platforms to drive transformational change for all women, challenge inequities rooted in gender and racial biases, maximize women’s participation in the economy and society, protect women’s health, and center women in the ongoing national dialogue about how best to move our nation forward.

Advocacy Council Meeting

At this month’s meeting, Advocacy Council members joined us to hear from this year’s cohort of 2023 Summer Leaders about their own experience with many of the issue areas that WE lead, including financial aid, student debt, accessing student supports and more!

Keep on the lookout for our FY24 meeting schedule coming soon!
