After a jam-packed July, we made an intentional decision to take a bit of a hiatus from events in August. We took some time as a staff to rest, recuperate, and to intentionally focus on internal work, planning, strategy, and more. Read about that decision, as well as a couple of events we participated in at the end of July.

Women & Children First Presents: My Dear Comrades

Thursday, July 27th was the in-person, sold-out event to celebrate the release of “My Dear Comrades” by Sunu P. Chandy, a book event with the Chicago-based critically acclaimed poet. She was joined by Women Employed’s Senior Coalition Manager Starr De Los Santos and Atena Danner, author of “Incantations for Rest: Poems, Meditations & Other Magic.” The event was graciously hosted by Women & Children First.

Pushing Forward Economic Strength: Elevating Latina/e/x Access & Equity Summit

The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), led by the Office of Minority Economic Empowerment (OMEE), hosted the “Pushing Forward Economic Strength: Elevating Latina/e/x Access & Equity Summit” on Thursday, July 27th, at Malcolm X College. The event focused on uplifting the contributions and resources of the Latina/x business community and their impact on the Illinois economy led by Latina/x business owners, professionals, and community leaders.

Women Employed’s Senior Coalition Manager, Starr De Los Santos, was a panelist for “Know Your Rights as a Business Owner,” and our WE Hub Manager, Shelby Flores, powered our Women’s Entrepreneurship Hub (WE Hub) table, providing information about Women Employed, and about Illinois resources for starting your own business!

Thank you to the DCEO and OMEE for hosting this first-of-its-kind convening. WE look forward to next year! Remember to SUPPORT and shop LOCAL Latina/x-owned businesses all year long!
