Women Employed’s Statement on Trump’s Address to Congress
We’re still reeling from President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress, an address that framed damaging policies and practices from his administration as though they were good for this country. We know better.
What we didn’t hear? We didn’t hear the priorities of everyday people who are looking for financial relief, lower prices, more opportunity, fairness. We didn’t hear anything about the policies that are proven to lift communities up, that women and families so desperately need.
Instead of boosting child care, increasing access to paid family and medical leave, making college more affordable, or making sure that every person has a fair shot at a secure future, we heard more of the same.
The president continued to attack Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies as part of his administration’s relentless assault on civil rights, continuing to spread lies about who benefits from inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplaces. We know better. We ALL benefit from a workplace and world full of different voices and perspectives. We ALL benefit when you can be hired for what you know, not who you know or who you look like.
Trump claimed his — and Musk’s — efforts to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in government have saved the country money and will make government more efficient. We know better. These cuts — to programs and services and to the workers who support them — are creating chaos, as people across the country lose access to critical resources they and their families rely upon, and thousands of federal workers lose their jobs. Firing people who keep us safe and who root out and address exploitation and discrimination isn’t good for women, workers, or families.
We know better and we know what we have to do: Fight back. Every call and email and meeting and postcard and post is making your voice heard and ensuring the president and his administration know that there isn’t a mandate from the people for his agenda of divisiveness and inequality.
